"Can You Be Taught Something as an Adult?"

It has been said that we vastly overestimate what we can accomplish in a day but on the other hand we most definitely underestimate what we can achieve in a year. These are powerful thoughts when you think about it. Mentally post high school or college, adults turn the learning brain off. Adults get set in their way and fill up the void with appointments, work-outs, internet, texting, having fun with friends, the 9-5 job grind, yoga, meditation, massages, hair treatments, sports, television, dinners, late nights at the club, vacations etc. Living the good life but not satisfied.

We talk about self-improvement and we might even pick up a class to start learning that new skill we always dreamed to begin. Our intentions are sound and pure! Educated and a good head on our shoulders, no sweat! A game plan is set and we of course soar at learning our new skill the first couple of weeks or even a month. But something happens to many adults and it has to do with the so-called finish-line. A month into our new journey a few bumps in the road come up and the job that we have continues to annoy us. We need a break as too many appointments are backing up with this new hectic schedule of classes. The old life we built is taking a beating under this new pace. You know it: work-outs, internet, texting, having fun with friends, the 9-5 job grind, yoga, meditation, massages, hair treatments, sports, television, dinners, late nights at the club, vacations, oh yeah and I forgot about that dream, remember?

What I question is; why does the dream have suffer the cutback when the bump in the road starts. The inner chatter needs to blame something, right? I’m in this new class for a month and why am I not seeing the pay-off? I paid all of this money and where are the results?? Why cant I catch a break??? I deserve this!! I have been working my butt of for the last 10, 20, 30 years!!! Where is the pay-off????

Blood pressure boiling yet? You start to take it out on the new skill you are learning. Arrrrgh just throw that stupid idea in the trash can; I want my comfortable life-style back, this shouldn’t be so hard. A new Greys Anatomy is on and they are getting down to the final 3 on Idol tonight. Priorities and comfort food is all I can think about right now!! Let me say it again; we vastly overestimate what we can accomplish in a day but on the other hand we most definitely underestimate what we can achieve in a year. We have become an instant gratification world. We want this done yesterday; we want results yesterday. It took ten years before our government caught up with bin Laden. Whether you liked what our government did or not.; it took 10 years, thousands of lives and billions upon billions of dollars all to get one guy.

There is no avoiding it; it’s going to take time, passion, commitment and resiliency to achieve the true results you want. I’m’ sure you are the best at your current job, but the reason is that you have been doing it for a long time. I realize that you are bored with your old life and it gets annoying. You have been at the new skill for a month, maybe two, maybe a year. Don’t just give it time; ADJUST THE THOUGHT PATTERN and THE “MENTAL” QUALITY of TIME during the month, two months or year. MAKE QUALITY ROOM for your dream just as you have done for your other precious appointments. You are struggling with your new craft because you haven’t brought it into your daily “mental” routine. You show up, but you are not there. TURN YOUR LEARNING BRAIN BACK ON!! Don’t coast through your class like you might be doing with life right now. PAIN and STRUGGLE DOESN’T MEAN PERMANENT MISERY! Pain and struggle is your mind and body telling you that you are learning and growing. Showing up is not enough anymore! You spent 10,000 hours on your past job, just show that same passion on the new skill you are learning.

Whatever you decide to try; you can’t win, if you don’t play!! Prosperity is at your fingertips! All you have to do is grab it!!
